My name is Laura, and I need to tell you something I am still a little embarrassed about — because I thought I was doing everything right.

Max is my 4-year-old golden retriever. He is the kind of dog that makes strangers stop on the sidewalk just to smile. Fluffy, gentle, always wagging. He has been my shadow since the day I brought him home as a puppy, and honestly? He is my best friend.
